Mortal by Ted Dekker and Tosca Lee

I was deeply disappointed in Mortal :/

My main complain about Mortal is that it's moving at such a fast pace that I couldn't connect with the characters.  There is a lot of action, which I like.  The problem is that it involves characters that I barely know -- and therefore don't really care for.  For example, in the first 50-something pages someone goes missing, someone else is taken hostage, two people who were presumed to be dead are actually alive and on the wrong side of the game, someone is accidentally killed, and two different councils take place.  The narration switches from the good guys to bad guys frequently and abruptly, and all of the characters have foreign-looking names so it's hard to remember who is who.  On top of that, new characters are introduced. All that in 54 pages?

As a result, the first chapters read like a narration and nothing more.  Almost like a history textbook, but with dialogue.  I was so eager for Mortal to come out, but now I don't know if I even want to finish it.

Mortal came out in early June.  It is a sequel to Forbidden, part of "The Books of Mortals" series.  I liked the Forbidden, though I was expecting a little more from the authors.

I understand, it is humanly impossible to top "The Circle" series that Ted Dekker created earlier (I'm a big fan of the trilogy.  Didn't like the last installment, Green, which is why I'm still calling it a trilogy).  But I'm sure they could come up with something equally good.  At times when reading "The Books of Mortals" it feels like The Circle plot has been recycled, just not written as well.

If you have already read Mortal, what did you think?
