The Sacrifice Game by Brian D'Amato

The Sacrifice Game.

I've been putting off this review for a while.  The book has gotten me all worked up, and for all the wrong reasons.

I read that The Sacrifice Game is one of top 25 novels of 2012.  Sounds promising.  The plot is pretty good too.  The end of the world in December of 2012 is still a hot topic, and the book is about the "doomster" behind it.  Not only is he running around with his evil plan, there is also a copy of his consciousness back in time, living among the ancient Mayans, and writing down instructions about how to better play the sacrifice game.  As you can see the plot looks very promising.

And now I shall begin my rant.  I couldn't read more than ten chapters of The Sacrifice Game because of the way it is written.  Here's what I'm talking about.

     "He seemed nervouser than usual."

And,
"She looked at me.  I looked at she."

Maybe it's because I've helped to translate a book before, or because I like to read every word in a text, but these things really bother me.  It's like I'm trying to enjoy a walk in a beautiful garden and I keep stumbling over blocks that appear in my way out of nowhere.  In other words, it is very frustrating.

Finally, my personal favorite,
"Chix, chix, chix.  Xkimik, xkimik.  Ay, dios.  Oh God, oh God.  It's not true, it's not true...
But it is.  It happened.  I did it.  It's happening, it's happening.  Todo por mi culpa.  All my fault.  Oh my God, ohmyGodohmyGodohmyGod, OMG, O, O, O."

Nobody talks like that!  Not even foreigners, including native Mayans!  'Oh my God, ohmyGodohmyGodohmyGod, OMG, O, O.."??  Are you kidding me?!

Heh, it's a good thing you guys can't see me right now, I'm all but steaming over here.  Sorry, but I had to get this off my chest.  I really wanted to read it, to know what happens, I did.  I even tried to overlook a totally random and detached sex scene in the beginning, which under normal circumstances would have caused me to put the book away.

Ten chapters, and I felt like I wasted my time.
